Faraday Waves-Based Integrated Ultrasonic Micro-Droplet Generator and Applications
نویسندگان
چکیده
An in-depth review on a new ultrasonic micro-droplet generator which utilizes megahertz (MHz) Faraday waves excited by silicon-based multiple Fourier horn ultrasonic nozzles (MFHUNs) and its potential applications is presented. The new droplet generator has demonstrated capability for producing micro droplets of controllable size and size distribution and desirable throughput at very low electrical drive power. For comparison, the serious deficiencies of current commercial droplet generators (nebulizers) and the other ultrasonic droplet generators explored in recent years are first discussed. The architecture, working principle, simulation, and design of the multiple Fourier horns (MFH) in resonance aimed at the amplified longitudinal vibration amplitude on the end face of nozzle tip, and the fabrication and characterization of the nozzles are then described in detail. Subsequently, a linear theory on the temporal instability of Faraday waves on a liquid layer resting on the planar end face of the MFHUN and the detailed experimental verifications are presented. The linear theory serves to elucidate the dynamics of droplet ejection from the free liquid surface and predict the vibration amplitude onset threshold for droplet ejection and the droplet diameters. A battery-run pocket-size clogging-free integrated micro droplet generator realized using the MFHUN is then described. The subsequent report on the successful nebulization of a variety of commercial pulmonary medicines against common diseases and on the experimental antidote solutions to cyanide poisoning using the new droplet generator serves to support its imminent application to inhalation drug delivery.

Generating and Focusing the Ultrasound Waves Using Elastomer-based Capacitive Micro-Speakers
Ultrasound wave is a kind of waves with the frequency higher than the human audible frequency. Although ultrasound was first used for military identification purposes, it has been used for decades for various other applications, especially medical applications. Medical applications of ultrasound include diagnostic and therapeutic applications, such as for the treatment of cancer. In this paper,...

In an 1831 paper, Michael Faraday described observations of the interaction of a vibrating solid with a liquid supported by the solid. The motions induced on the surface of the liquid, which he termed crispations, resulted from the creation of capillary waves, which are still a subject of research. The contributions to the present Faraday Discussion concern chieÑy the use of piezoelectric cryst...
متن کاملAn Experimental Study of Micron-scale Droplet Aerosols Produced via Ultrasonic Atomization
In the last 10 years, laser-driven fusion experiments performed on atomic clusters of deuterium have shown a surprisingly high neutron yield per joule of input laser energy. Results indicate that the optimal cluster size for maximizing fusion events should be in the 0.01–1 mm diameter range, but an appropriate source of droplets of this size does not exist. In an attempt to meet this need, we u...

cells, DNA-coated microspheres and microorganisms, is very important in life science studies and biomedical applications. In this study, acoustic radiation force in an ultrasonic standing wave field is used for micro-objects manipulation, a technique termed as acoustophoresis. Free surfaces of liquid droplets are used as sound reflectors to confine sound waves inside the droplets. Two technique...
متن کاملDevelopment of an AA size energy transducer with micro resonators
This paper presents the preliminary design and experimental results of a standard AA size vibration-induced micro energy transducer which is integrated with a power-management circuit. The generator is a spring mass system which uses laser-micromachined copper springs to convert mechanical energy into electrical power by Faraday’s Law of Induction. A power-management circuit is used to step up ...
